Within a single week, this unofficial application MyEtherWallet becomes the third most popular product on the AppStore in the “Finance” category while having no relation to any electronic wallet software for storing ETH or other coins, TechCrunch reports.
The media marks that Nam Le, the app developer, has already created two gaming applications about panda combats but has never had anything to do with electronic wallets or other cryptocurrency applications before.
“This is NOT US. We have file reports and emailed and reported. Would appreciate the community’s assistance in getting these scamtards out of our lives,” the company’s official Twitter says.
The application allows users to create or import wallets for storing cryptocurrency assets outside the exchange platforms. In the meantime, an unknown developer more likely gains control over wallet private keys allowing him to control wallets.
Furthermore, the application is open source software, but the developer has made it commercial, trying to monetize public technology.
It’s not clear yet how the application managed to get through the AppStore check procedures and rise to the top.
Earlier, MyEtherWallet users lost $15.8 thousand due to a phishing website.
